With Thanksgiving right around the corner, this week seemed like a good time to discuss methods to help increase feelings of thankfulness. In my last blog post, I talked about the personal benefits of gratitude, but how exactly can we choose to feel thankful? Especially when recent events make it difficult to see the positive, how can we foster an attitude of gratitude? The answer is intention.Read More
When I think of my childhood, I think of magic. I have always been fascinated with the idea that people can be powerful, that human beings can develop abilities that allow them to do the impossible. When I was a kid, this meant I devoured Harry Potter, played with glittery wands, and adored Halloween. As an adult, I think this same interest in human power and transformation is what led me to a career in therapy, and a specialization in self care.Read More
This month, as we focus on relying on self care through big transitions, it feels important to acknowledge that making these major changes can sometimes be a form of self care in and of itself. I doodled, sketched, painted, and wrote about deer for years, in an attempt to understand and internalize their message of hope. Eventually I got a tattoo - an image of a sleeping fawn - in order to carry this symbolism with me wherever I go. My tattoo, which I refer to as "my friend," has truly been helpful to me over the nearly five years since I got it. It is my animal medicine.Read More
For the next three weeks, I'll be sharing posts related to Ayurvedic medicine and making specific suggestions based on the three different energies, or "doshas" identified by this tradition. If you missed last week's blog post, which provided an introduction to Ayurvedic medicine and a link to the doshas quiz, find it here.
The goal of Ayurvedic medicine is to help people understand and balance their energies. Imbalances often come from problems in one of three areas: lifestyle, diet, and movement. I'll explore diet and movement in the upcoming weeks, but for now let's focus on lifestyle. Lifestyle factors that contribute to imbalanced energies are different depending on the type of energy that tends to be dominant in you.Read More
