Witch's Brew

Lauren

When I think of my childhood, I think of magic. I have always been fascinated with the idea that people can be powerful, that human beings can develop abilities that allow them to do the impossible. When I was a kid, this meant I devoured Harry Potter, played with glittery wands, and adored Halloween. As an adult, I think this same interest in human power and transformation is what led me to a career in therapy, and a specialization in self care.

Human beings are powerful magic makers. In the context of my work, I have seen people learn to control the content of their thoughts, which allows them to choose what emotions they are willing to experience, and when. I have seen people overcome heartbreak by healing themselves. I have witnessed transformations in therapy sessions that give me no doubt that magic exists within us. And I see self care as our most powerful tool in releasing this magic. Self care activities are the equivalent of potion ingredients or whispered incantations as we attempt to perform the magic of helping ourselves feel the way we want to feel.

Check out these Self care "spells" below and let me know in the comments about your own magical ingredients for a good day.

TO SUMMON AN ATTITUDE OF ACCEPTANCE ABOUT CHANGE

-Listen to "Circle Game" by Joni Mitchell

-Go outside and collect 5 beautiful autumn leaves to bring home and press in a book

-Mindfully sip a hot cup of tea

TO SUMMON ENLIGHTENMENT ABOUT YOUR NATURE AS A MYSTICAL BEING

-Light pretty candles around your home

-Soak in a hot bath (preferably with epsom salt, bubbles, and essential oils)

-While submerged and soaking, recognize that 60% of your own body is made up of water

TO SUMMON A SENSE OF CHILDLIKE PLAYFULNESS ABOUT MAGIC AND FEAR

-Read Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales, letting yourself experience fright during the darker stories

-Sketch or draw an image of your idea of a monster. Then draw yourself as a superhero, vanquishing it.

-Watch the genius gem of a movie, Hocus Pocus
